At the start of my adventure to compile an illustrated cookbook of French family recipes, I joked that a single book would never be enough to encompass the rich world of French cheeses and wines. Indeed, the universe of these culinary treasures is so vast that it deserves its own library. I live near Beaune, a jewel in the crown of French wine regions, where wine tastings are almost a spiritual experience. Winemakers speak passionately about their wines, and visiting the expansive cellars, filled with rows of wooden and now also synthetic barrels, is always an impressive experience. While I know the basics of wine – which wine goes with which dish and the major wine regions – for me, wine is primarily a matter of taste and memory. It could be an exquisite wine enjoyed under the southern French sun, or a glass that tasted particularly good after a day of skiing in the French Alps. Or the wines from Alsace, where my roots lie, each with their own story. Then there is cheese, my ultimate weakness. I adore almost all cheeses and use them generously in my cooking, but I also enjoy them pure, straight from the hand. From dates stuffed with Roquefort, brie from the market, goat cheese from my across-the-street neighbor, to camembert baked in the oven – just writing about it makes my mouth water. As I began my story, so I end it: with the thought that I could easily fill an entire book with stories about French wines and cheeses. Who knows, perhaps one day I will embark on that adventure.

Delving into the rich history of French gastronomy, we discover a world where wines and cheeses are not only the core of culinary traditions but also tell a story of regional identity and craftsmanship. France, with its diversity of landscapes and climates, offers an unmatched variety of flavors and textures that are reflected in both the wines and cheeses from various regions.

Take, for instance, Sancerre and Chardonnay from Burgundy, white wines that derive their unique character from the specific terroirs of France. Sancerre, beloved for its lively acidity and mineral notes, originates from the Loire Valley. The limestone soil of this region imparts a subtle complexity and freshness to the wine. This wine is often paired with goat cheeses from the same region, such as Crottin de Chavignol, which gets its piquant flavor and creamy texture from the rich, varied flora of the Loire Valley.

Chardonnay, on the other hand, is the star of Burgundy, where the wine gains its rich, floral notes and depth. In Burgundy, we also find famous cheeses such as Époisses, a washed-rind cheese with a robust flavor and a soft, creamy texture that perfectly complements the complexity of Burgundian wines.

The red wines, such as Bordeaux and Pinot Noir from Burgundy, each tell their own story. Bordeaux, with appellations like Médoc and Pomerol, is world-renowned for its blends of grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These wines are known for their rich flavors and long aging potential. They are often served with hard cheeses like Comté, a cheese with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) that guarantees its quality and origin from the Jura region.

Pinot Noir from Burgundy, known for its delicate, fruity profile, reflects the finesse of Burgundian wines. Cheese such as Chaource, originating from the Champagne region, is a soft, creamy cheese with a mild, slightly tangy flavor that beautifully complements the elegance of Pinot Noir.

The harmony between wine and cheese is inextricably linked to French culture. Each cheese, from Brie from Île-de-France to Roquefort from the Midi-Pyrénées, carries the flavor of its region and embodies the diversity of French landscapes.

The Bordeaux wine region is renowned for its powerful red wines, many of which are blends of grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. A famous wine from this region is Médoc, known for its deep flavor and aging potential. These robust wines pair excellently with strong cheeses such as…

  • Ossau-Iraty: A sheep’s milk cheese from the Pyrenees, with a rich, creamy texture and a nutty flavor.
  • Cantal: One of the oldest French cheeses, with a firm texture and a mild, buttery flavor.
  • The Champagne region is world-renowned for its sparkling wines, produced through a unique fermentation process. Champagne is versatile when it comes to cheese pairings, especially because its bubbly nature can cut through rich, creamy textures. Cheeses that pair well with Champagne include:
  • Brie: A soft cheese from Île-de-France with a mild, creamy center beneath a white rind.
  • Chaource: This creamy, soft cheese from Champagne itself has a slightly tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with the bubbles.

The Rhône Valley produces some of France’s most aromatic and spicy wines, especially red wines like the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which are rich and full of flavor. These wines call for cheeses with character:

  • Saint-Félicien: A soft, creamy cheese from the Dauphiné region, with a mild and slightly sweet profile.
  • Valençay: This goat cheese has a distinctive pyramid shape and a slightly tangy, nutty flavor that pairs well with the depth of Rhône wines.

Each wine region in France offers a unique combination of flavors and textures, with the wines and cheeses beautifully complementing and enhancing one another, a testament to France’s rich culinary tradition.
